Christopher Tolkien published a series of works based on his father’s extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. He’s got Hobbits being silly and serious, sometimes trying to imitate Men and Elves with dde degrees of success.

The book, like the first edition of The Fellowship of the Ringis presented as if it is an actual translation from the Red Book of Westmarchand contains some background information on the world of Middle-earth which is not found elsewhere.

The canonicity of this article’s subject is uncertain. I like his character’s sense of mystery and like Tolkien was reported to have said, “some things should remain mysterious in any mythology”. I listened to this as an audiobook, so maybe actually reading the book will help, because I think there are sentences and paragraphs that might just need a second read to make the story complete and perfect and that’s just hard to do with an audiobook.

Most of his poems keep a rigid rhyme scheme, but Tolkien also complains about all the rhyming, saying, “in their simplicity Hobbits evidently regarded such things as virtues.
